Sensitivity to nature has always shaped my artistic practice. My artwork seeks to present our connection to trees, referencing themes of grandeur, place, and harm versus protection. It is my desire to convince viewers that trees are aesthetically and environmentally essential to all life.
Trees remind us of our minute scale in comparison to their grandeur. They are both universal and local. Ultimately, trees are metaphors that serve as stand-ins for trees collectively. However, all of my drawn tree species are native to upstate South Carolina. The artworks are intended to simultaneously warn and inspire awe through subtle cuts in paper or erasure marks. The tree’s inherent form captivates, but at a closer look, raises questions when signs of damage become apparent. I seek to share how these living beings physically change when we either choose to protect or harm them.
